In November, the UFC has traditionally held a large-scale tournament in Madison Square Garden in recent years, with UFC 268 following the blockbuster UFC 267. It's a rare occurrence when the UFC holds numbered tournaments with a weekly difference. The UFC 268 headline will feature a rematch between welterweight champion Kamaru Usman (19-1) and former UFC interim welterweight champion Colby Covington (16-2).
Kamaru Usman vs. Colby Covington
Fans are again unhappy with the fact that Usman is given revenge with his defeated rival. Firstly, Covington was stopped in the first fight, and secondly, Colby had only one fight in almost two years. So why did the UFC decide to have this rematch? Basically, Usman doesn't have a clear No. 1 contender right now, and Covington is at least a well-known face in the division and can do a lot of things.
Strange, but only "Chaos" doesn't say much before this fight. Perhaps it is more difficult for him to insult the one who broke his jaw?
Covington has undoubtedly been successful in the UFC, beating guys like Tyrone Woodley, Raphael Dos Anjos and Robbie Lawler. These victories were based on pressure. Usually, "Chaos" used their takedowns or threats to carry them out in order to throw a bunch of punches on opponents.
But with regard to Usman, this threat practically does not exist. The Nigerian Nightmare has never been promoted to the ground in his UFC career, and it is unlikely that Covington will be able to change that statistic. This means that Covington will have to count on his punches in his rematch with Usman. While Covington is not a bad boxer, he doesn't have the punching power that Usman has, and the challenger doesn't have the jab that the champion has.
Rose Namajunas vs. Zhang Weili
UFC lightweight champion Rose Namajunas (10-4) in the first defense to return the title will have an immediate rematch with Zhang Weili (21-2).
Zhang won the UFC lightweight title in August 2019 by knocking out Jessica Andrade in a tournament in China in less than a minute. In March 2020, the Chinese woman defended her title when she beat Yoanna Jedrzejczyk by split decision in arguably the best fight in UFC women's history. In April 2021, at UFC 261, Zhang fought Namayunas and was knocked out by a high-kicking challenger in the second minute of the fight.
After two years in the division, Namajunas lost her title in May 2019 when she was knocked out by Jessica Andrade. 14 months later, Namajunas took revenge on Andrade, who was no longer a champion. And then Rose fought Zhang.
Frankie Edgar vs. Marlon Vera
Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar (24-9-1) will fight in the bantamweight division, where he is ranked 8th in the UFC, against Marlon Vera's No. 13 (19-7-1).
Edgar began dropping in weight in 2013, after three unsuccessful featherweight title shots, he decided to drop to the bantamweight division. Franky made his new title debut in August 2020, winning a split decision over Pedro Mu?oz. In February, Edgar suffered his first bantamweight defeat, being knocked out in 28 seconds by Corey Sandhagen with a knee jump. In the last four fights, Edgar's record is 1-3.
Vera in August last year loudly declared himself when he inflicted the first defeat on Sean O'Malley, knocking out the top prospect. The Ecuadorian then got a fight against former UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo and lost to the Brazilian in December on points. Vera closed the loss in June with a unanimous decision over Davey Grant.
Justin Gage vs. Michael Chandler
A promising lightweight showdown between UFC # 2 Justin Gagey (22-3) and # 5 Michael Chandler (22-6) awaits fans at UFC 268.
Former WSOF champion Gagee had an excellent streak of four wins, where he knocked out James Vick, Edson Barbosa and Donald Cerrone in the first round, and was also stopped by blows in the 5th round by Tony Ferguson, who had won his previous 12 fights. Defeating the latter earned Gagee the belt of the interim UFC lightweight champion, and in October 2020 he entered the fight for the undisputed champion title against Khabib Nurmagomedov. Nurmagomedov defended his championship title for the third time, finishing Gagey with a rear naked choke in the second round. After that failure, Highlight did not perform.
Former three-time Bellator lightweight champion Chandler made his UFC debut in January 2021 with a quick knockout win over Dan Hooker. And already in May, at UFC 262, "Iron" entered the battle for the vacant UFC lightweight title. But his rival Charles Oliveira turned out to be more agile, having managed to beat Chandler with a ground-and-pound at the start of the second five-minute.
